A Historical Tour in the Aegean

Turkey could be a beautiful country steeped in history, these are just some of the historic places i've got visited.

ASPENDOS

The most famous attractions found here are the theatre, the stadium, the aqueduct and also the agora.

BERGAMA

Bergama is home to 2 of Turkey's most famous archeological sites, Pergamum's Acropolis and Asklepion, both of which are listed within the top 100 historical sites on the Mediterranean.

Pergamum (now Bergama) was a vital capital city in times of yore and was built on a hill which rose to 1,000ft. The traditional city is formed from three main parts, the Acropolis-a sacred part but also used for social and cultural activities, the Lower City-where the lower classes lived, and Asklepion-home to at least one of the earliest medical centres on record.

BODRUM (Ancient Halicarnassus)

Home to the famous marine archaeology Museum, Castle of Crusaders, the traditional Mausoleum, the traditional Theatre and also the Myndos Gate.

DEMRE (Castle)

Located about 5kms from Cayagzi, Demre is home to the Church of St Nicholas, the ruins of Roman Myra, a preserved theatre and rock-hewn tombs.

EPHESUS

The ancient city of Ephesus is found in Selcuk, 30kms from Kusadasi. a longtime port which was once the trade centre of the traditional world and an early Christian religious centre, and now a tourist centre.

MILETOS

Miletos is one among the oldest cities of Ionia and is found about 60kms from Kusadasi, on the western coast of Anatolia. The foremost important monuments here are the Delphinion Temple (dedicated to Apollo Delphinion, the protector of ships and harbours), the Amphitheatre and therefore the Bath of Faustina.

Miletos was a centre of philosophy and learning, home to Thales, Anaximander, Hekataios and lots of more.

OLYMPOS

Olympus is an ancient city, located during a valley, near the town of Kumluca. Here you'll find ancient Lycian ruins, mystery flames that burn from the side of a mountain, accommodation in treehouses, amongst other attractions.

PATARA

Located at the mouth of the Xanthos River, Patara was the most naval and trading port of Lycia until it became silted and become a disease ridden marsh. Features of Patara include the oldest lighthouse within the world, Tepecik Acropolis & Necropolis, The Arch of Modestus, The Harbour (Date) Bath, The Vespasian Bath, Amphitheatre, The Marcia Temple Tomb, The Akdam Temple Tomb, The Pseudoperipteral Temple Tomb, Hadrians Granary and therefore the Harbour Church.

PERGE

Perge marks the beginning of the St Paul Trail and is found about 18kms from Antalya. Features of Perge include the Hellenistic Gate, the Agora, the Nymphaeum, the Sarcophagi, the Basilica and therefore the Acropolis.

SIDE

One of the foremost important buildings here is that the 15,000 spectator theatre. Other features include the city's gates and walls, remains of aqueducts, temples, agora, the old baths and also the harbour.

XANTHOS

Xanthos(located shortly from Patara) and Letoon are considered a 'double site' as they're closely linked, Letoon (located about 10kms to the south of Xanthos) being administered by Xanthos.

Xantos-Letoon is listed within the UNESCO World Heritage Sites because it is one in all Turkey's most remarkable archaeological sites. Features of Xanthos include the Amphitheatre, Acropolis (1 & 2), Necropolis, the 'Harpy Tomb', Pillar Tomb, Xanthian Obelisk, the Roman-Byzantine Street and Byzantine Basilica.
