When you come to Ortahisar, visiting the castle will of course be at the top of your list. Ortahisar Castle is a rock castle located in Ortahisar town and offers a magnificent panorama over the fairy chimneys of Hallacdere and the snowy peak of Mount Erciyes. Today Ortahisar castle has been restored and the summit is reached by a ladder.
Ortahisar Castle, with its height of 110 meters (south side) and 80 meters (north side), is also one of the highest peaks of the Cappadocia region.
At the base of the castle, you'll cross a series of cobblestone streets and paths first, possibly distracted by a cafe, wine cellar, or both.
Then you will reach the ticket office where we pay the Ortahisar Castle entrance fee of approximately 2 USD. The climb takes only 5 minutes, as you do not go up the hill until the middle of the castle. The path takes you through the castle's inner caves, stairs and outer stairs.
You can also enjoy the magnificent panorama of Ortahisar town with its picturesque stone houses, narrow streets and lovely churches.
Unfortunately, the castle closes at 6pm and when we visited in the summer this was a few hours before the sun actually set. Therefore, we could not watch the sunset from the top. In Uçhisar, the other town nearby, you can watch the sunset at Uçhisar Castle.
However, even at 6 pm, the golden light starts to look great in the castle and we can enjoy the view from all directions, with a viewing platform spanning 3 different angles. You can step over some old railings into a cool little cave that was the perfect relaxation spot for us.
